On the final day of the World Judo Championships in Baku, Georgia’s national team won the bronze medal in the mixed team competition. The Georgian judoka defeated China 4–1 in the bronze medal contest.

Nino Gulbani, Luka Maisuradze, Irakli Demetrashvili and Eter Liparteliani secured victories for Georgia. Unfortunately, Sofio Somkhishvili was unable to continue competing due to an injury, meaning Georgia began the contest with one bout recorded as a loss.

Japan won the world title in the mixed team competition, defeating the Russian Federation in the final. Russia claimed the silver medal, while Georgia and Uzbekistan took bronze.

The mixed team competition was introduced to the World Judo Championships programme in 2017. Japan won the first seven editions, establishing a remarkable record of dominance. However, in 2025, at the World Championships in Budapest, Georgia ended Japan’s winning streak by defeating South Korea in the final to become world champions for the first time in history.

In Baku, Japan reclaimed the title and became world champions in this format for the eighth time. Since the introduction of the mixed team competition in 2017, only two nations have won the world title: Japan, with eight victories, and Georgia, with one.

Georgia has now won four medals at the World Mixed Team Championships. The Georgian judoka claimed bronze in 2023 and 2024, became world champions in 2025, and finished third again in Baku in 2026.
