Luka Maisuradze became the winner of the European Championships taking place in Tbilisi. Georgian fans were expecting an all-Georgian final in the -90 kg weight category, as the top two seeds of the competition, Lasha Bekauri and Luka Maisuradze, were competing. However, only one Georgian, Luka Maisuradze, reached the final, where he defeated Serbia’s Nemanja Majdov and won the European Championship title for the second time in his career.
Two-time Olympic champion Lasha Bekauri was hindered by an injury sustained during the competition. Despite this, he managed to reach the semifinals, where he lost to Majdov, and then competed for bronze against Olympic medalist, France’s Maxime-Gaël Ngayap Hambou.
In the -81 kg weight category, three-time world champion Tato Grigalashvili won the silver medal. In the final, he was defeated by the reigning world champion, Russia’s Timur Arbuzov. It is noteworthy that this was Tato Grigalashvili’s sixth appearance at the European Championships, and he has reached the final on all six occasions, winning three gold and three silver medals.
