The Georgian national judo team won two gold medals on the second day of the European Championships taking place in Tbilisi. Eteri Liparteliani and Lasha Shavdatuashvili became European champions.
In the final of the -57 kg weight category, Eteri Liparteliani, who was seeded number one at the tournament, defeated her well-known opponent Timna Nelson-Levy of Israel. On her way to the final, she won four matches. For the reigning world champion Eter Liparteliani, this is the first gold medal at the European Championships in her career. Previously, she had won one silver and two bronze medals.
Lasha Shavdatuashvili won the European champion title for the second time in his career. In the -73 kg weight category, after winning three matches, he advanced to the semifinals, where he defeated the reigning world champion, France’s Joan-Benjamin Gaba. In the final, he defeated the reigning Olympic champion Hidayat Heydarov of Azerbaijan. Lasha Shavdatuashvili won a gold medal at the European Championships again after 13 years — he first became European champion in 2013 in the -66 kg category. In addition, he has won two silver and three bronze medals at European Championships.
On the first day of the European Championships, Giorgi Sardalashvili won a silver medal in the -60 kg weight category. He entered the Tbilisi European Championships as the reigning champion, but in the final he was defeated by Luka Mkheidze, who competes for France.
